Dutch weather (rain) according to a South American, the struggle is real!
September 2012 I went to the Netherlands, the country I chose to do my Studies. Coming from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, I wanted to go to a very different country than mine, and let me tell you, I think I could not have chosen a better country with this objective. It seems that Dutch and Brazilians are in opposite sides of the “cultural spectrum”. I decided to move there without ever having put a foot on the country, so I was not really ready for what was about to hit me. I was full of excitement for the new chapter of my life, a new country, new people, new everything.
Anyways, it is general knowledge that in the Netherlands the weather is very shitty to say the least. I knew that before I moved, of course, or at least I thought I did. Coming from a tropical “summer” all year long city I did not know that weather conditions could be so BAD! Seriously, I did not even know it was possible.
After a lot of complaining and whining, and making fun of the locals that seemed to think 15C was amazing. And with the help of apps like, Buienalarm, that notifies you everytime it is going to rain (FYI my phone is always beeping), I finally got used to the Dutch weather. Now I cherish and respect the sun so much. Every little sunny day (about 7 a year) I go to the garden and spend my whole afternoon like a lizard in the sun.
And after freezing my figurative balls in northern Europe I made a promise to never complain about warm weather again!
